Mayan Route

Along the Yucatán Peninsula

Join this unique S&S learning adventure, traveling along the Mayan Yucatan Peninsula through the states of Yucatán, Campeche, Chiapas, & Tabasco. Enjoy walking and exploring the wonders of the ancient world on this impressive 8-day trip. We have scheduled the trip during the time of the year for ideal temperate weather. This tour brings back to life the golden years days at the beginning of the 20th century when the Yucatan Peninsula had its own “gold fever” with the industry of the henequen fiber, & hundreds of kilometers of rails were built among the lush vegetation of the Mayan jungle to link the wealthy sisal haciendas with their plantations & with the prosperous cities of Mérida & Campeche.

Discover the mysterious Mayan treasures at the UNESCO World Heritage archeological sites of Uxmal & Palenque and Chichén-Itza — one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Unlock the secrets of these pre-Hispanic master builders, who were referred to as “The Greeks of America.” Appreciate Mérida, a lovely city of elegance & aristocracy, of wide avenues & white palaces, is known as the “Ciudad Blanca” (the white city).

Stroll the quiet streets of the fortified city of Campeche facing the ocean. Guarded by strong bastions from ancient pirates, Campeche was one of the main ports of New Spain, channeling a large number of Yucatecan products. Marvel at the enormous Olmec heads weighing an average of 20 tons each on La Venta tour in Villahermosa.  This is becoming one of our more popular travel vacations.

Mayan Route Highlights

La Venta Museum Park

Admire the colossal remains of Olmec sculptures and carved altars found at La Venta Museum Park. Each of these gigantic heads measuring 2.7 meters high and 20 tons of weight were carved in the 4th century AD. This museum park houses many artifacts gathered from La Venta, once a ceremonial center of the Olmec people. Due to construction near La Venta artifacts from the original cite were relocated to this park. This open-air museum, formed in 1952, is the only one of its kind in Mexico.

Palenque Ruins

Visit Palenque ruins, an all-time S&S favorite. Palenque is located on a natural balcony that opens up to extraordinary jungle plains. Among the most aesthetically impressive ruins in Mesoamerica, it has been described as the most beautiful Mayan ruin of all. The ancient city reached its peak from the 6th to the 8th centuries AD.  Immerse yourself in Mayan history as you view the archeological site, particularly the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Royal Tomb, and the Palace, all while surrounded by exquisite jungle flora and fauna

Chan-Kah Resort Village

Surround yourself in the natural beauty of Palenque at Chan-Kah Resort Village. Enjoy the rich and colorful gardens full of stunning jungle vegetation. Take a swim in the exotic pool built to resemble a Mayan cenote. The comfortable accommodations, impressive amenities and luxurious garden surroundings will stir your spirit

Uxmal Ruins

This ancient city of the Maya people is considered one of the most important archeological sites of the Maya culture. See the wonderful pyramid of the Magician with its five levels and the impressive Governor’s Palace that is over 12,000 sq. ft. This wonderful site has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Chichén Itzá

The historical ruins of Chichén-Itzá were built in the late Classic Period. It is arguably the best known and most popular among all the Mexican ruins and has the honor of being one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is the most completely restored archeological site in the Yucatan. This famous ceremonial center has been a sacred place to the Mayans for centuries. The earliest buildings date from 600 AD. Most impressive are the Ball Game Court, the Temple of the Thousand Columns, the Castle, and the Observatory, not to mention the ancient city of Chichén.
