Newest Learning Adventure Tour!! Chiapas:  Sue Zinacantan--small
My husband and I did a scouting tour to Chiapas, the southernmost Mexican state on the Guatemalan border.  It is full of jungles, rivers, waterfalls, and Mayan ruins.  This trip is not for everyone, but, for the real adventurer you can climb the tallest pyramid in Meso America  (7 stories), boat through the famous Sumidero Canyon, and visit my favorite Mayan site of all times—Palenque.

Oaxaca City:  I led the Jan. Oaxaca tour this year and I am once again amazed at the variety available on this tour.  -Premier archaeological sites, some of the best crafts in Mexico (we visit the artisan’s home to see them at work), one of the best botanical garden tours I have ever taken, and a fun cooking class.  We made stuffed peppers (chile rellenos) this year and squash blossom soup (yum!) and chocolate tamales for dessert.  We had the privilege of being in the same class as 4 professional chefs from Denver who were branching out to start a new restaurant specializing in Latin foods.

TRAVEL TIPS:

  • The Zika Virus has been in the news so much lately.  Zika can cause fevers, rashes and joint pain…as well as birth defects when pregnant women are infected.  The reality is that many mosquito-repellent products provide little or no protection.
  • Use a mosquito-control product that has an “EPA Registration Number” printed on its label.  Products with these numbers have been scientifically shown to be both effective and safe when used as directed.
  • An effective repellent almost certainly will feature one of the following ingredients…
  • DEET.  Chose a product that has a 25% to 35% concentration.
  • Picaridin.  This odorless synthetic product is based on a compound found in black pepper plants.  It is as effective as DEET and typically feels lighter and less greasy on the skin.  Choose a product that has 15% to 19% picaridin.
  • Oil of lemon-eucalyptus.  This is the only natural ingredient that has been proven effective against mosquitoes and ticks, too.  Choose a product that has a concentration of around 40%.

TERRORISM FACTS VS. TERRORISM FEARS  from our State Dept. conservative warnings:

  1. In 2011 17 U.S. citizens killed as a result of terrorism, including civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq.
  2. You are 6 times more likely to die from hot weather than from terrorism.
  3. You are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer in America than terrorism abroad.
  4. You are 404 times more likely to die from a fall than from a terrorist attack.
  5. You are 1048 times more likely to die in a car accident than from a terrorist attack.
  6. You are 12, 571 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack.
  7. Obesity is 23,528 times more likely to kill you than a terrorist attack.

According to the Washington Post, the chance of dying when traveling abroad in a terrorism-related attack is l in 9.3 million.  It is ironic that the French government actually has warnings to their travelers about New York City, Houston, ST. Louis and Richmond, among others.

According to statistics from a university “think tank,” traveling abroad can increase our health and life span and well-being overall.
