Have your cameras and binoculars handy, as you head north, almost to the Nicaraguan border, for a river launch traversing the Rio Frio to the Caño Negro Biological Reserve. Of all the nature preserves, these remote 20,000 acres have the largest viewable selection of indigenous wildlife. From the comfort of the boat you can expect to see turtles, crocodiles, a couple species of monkeys, iguana and a multitude of waterfowl
Travel up the eastern slope of the central mountain chain to the world-famous cloud forests of Santa Elena and experience a place where the clouds reside within the forest. With nearly 100 percent humidity year round, this area is constantly bathed in mist and home to lush vegetation and amazing wildlife.
Hit the trail with a naturalist guide in Carara National Park. Enjoy a unique excursion as you traverse the dividing line of the tropical dry forest and tropical humid forest, which provides a very special mix of vegetation and wildlife. The opossum, two-toed Sloth, agouti, armadillo, pacas, great anteater, kinkajou, tayra, margay cat, collared peccary, white-tailed deer, poison-arrow frogs, and the omnipresent monkeys are just some of the possible wildlife you may encounter.
Embrace nature at its purest in the early hours at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Remember, the early bird gets the worm, and the early visitor sees more birds! Observe such birds such as Northernd Emerald-Toucanet, Mountain Elaenia, Black-faced Solitaire, Slaty-backed Nightingale-Thrush, Veery, Swainson’s Thrush, Wood Thrush, White-throated Thrush, Slate-throated Redstard. You will also enjoy some optional hiking on several trails, ranging in time from 45 minutes to 3½ hours.
