Hotel Misión at Cerocahui

When you envisioned your adventure to Mexico’s Copper Canyon, you were envisioning Cerocahui and Hotel Misión, though you may not have known it. The Cerocahui valley is a half-hour bus ride from the train station at Bahuichivo where you disembark El Chepe. Thanks to the extraordinary beauty of the environment and the luxury of Hotel Misión, it is a place that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The most popular tour from the hotel is the Urique Canyon overlook, and it is the most expansive view you will have on your tour outside of the Batopilas road. A visit to the 17th-century mission church next door to the hotel, an historic landmark that is a functional place of worship to this day, puts you in touch with the colonial history of the canyon. A scenic five-mile round-trip to Cerocahui Waterfall (a moderate to difficult walk, and a great adventure on horseback!) is a favorite day trip; during the rainy season many enjoy a moderate two-mile hike to Las Cascaditas (the little waterfalls). A visit to the Catholic Indian Boarding School next to the hotel is a special way to connect with the local community (visitors and donations are needed and welcome). A van tour to the bottom of Urique Canyon is an unforgettable excursion. A small vineyard, owned operated by the Balderrama family, is open for tours, and there is generally plenty of hiking, birding and horseback riding available to enjoy.

This Balderrama hotel is your “home in the country,” and a favorite stopping place of many Copper Canyon travelers. A cozy ambiance is created in this lovely Spanish mission-style retreat by the comfortable, ample lobby with its massive fireplace, the family style dining room, and the 40 rooms attractively decorated in Mexican décor and heated by wood stoves. You are beckoned to take off your shoes and stay awhile, as time here is seemingly suspended. The hotel vineyard supplies grapes for the Balderrama wines.
